PROMISES OF GOD
THEME: PROMISES OF GOD
Promise - A declaration or assurance that one will do something or that
a particular thing will happen.
It has two parts, the
part of one promising and one being promised to. (God and human being)
Call to worship: Isaiah 41:10 (NIV): "So do not fear, for I am with
you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
First Reading:
Joshua 1: 1 – 10 after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to
Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses
my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the
Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the
Israelites. 3 I will give
you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 4 Your territory will extend from the desert
to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the
Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. 5 No one will be able to stand against
you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with
you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be
strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit
the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.
7 “Be
strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant
Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that
you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep
this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and
night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will
be prosperous and successful. 9 Have
I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be
discouraged, for the Lord your
God will be with you wherever you go.”
10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the
people:
Second Reading: Joshua 4: 1 – 7 When the
whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, 2 “Choose
twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, 3 and tell them to take up twelve
stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests
are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where
you stay tonight.”
4 So
Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the
Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and
said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to
take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the
Israelites, 6 to serve as a
sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do
these stones mean?’ 7 tell
them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the
covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan,
the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a
memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

Instances where God is making a promise
v
Promise to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3): God promised Abraham that He would make him into a

bless the entire world (Genesis 18:18).
